All students in Years 7 and 8 are enrolled in the Accelerated Reader programme. This programme is designed to develop students' reading skills quickly by identifying a bespoke ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development) score for each pupil. This 'zone' lies between 'too easy' and 'too hard', and therefore offers students the best chance of progressing in reading.

Once students have finished reading their book, they complete a short quiz online. Students will receive instant feedback and also points if they score 80% or above. These points are converted into merits, certificates, badges and prizes, and prove an excellent motivational tool. The number of words each student reads is also recorded: we invite your child to set themselves the wonderful goal of becoming one of our 'Word Millionaires' this year!

For the programme to succeed, students need to read for at least 20 minutes each day. This small injection of daily reading time yields big results as students who participate fully in the programme make an additional 3-5 months of progress compared to their non-participating peers.

The Accelerated Reading programme is also available to access from any computer, tablet, or mobile phone. This makes taking quizzes quick and easy: all students need are their login details.
